Indications of Aprocin 3 Ophthalmic Ointment

Ciprofloxacin 0.3 percent Eye/Ear Drops is used to treat infections caused by susceptible strains of the following bacteria in the following conditions:

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae are some of the bacteria that cause corneal ulcers.
  • Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Bacterial Conjunctivitis It's also used to treat keratitis, kerato-conjunctivitis, blepharitis, blepharo-conjunctivitis, and dacryocistitis, as well as to prevent ocular infections caused by Neisseria gonorrhea or Chlamydia trachomatis.

 

Pharmacology of Aprocin 3 Ophthalmic Ointment

Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibacterial drug that is administered intravenously. Ciprofloxacin's bactericidal effect is due to suppression of the topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV enzymes, which are necessary for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination.

 

Dosage & Administration of Aprocin 3 Ophthalmic Ointment

Corneal ulcers: The recommended dosage regimen for the treatment of corneal ulcers is two drops into the affected eye every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours and then two drops into the affected eye every 30 minutes for the remainder of the first day. On the second day, instill 2 drops in the affected eye hourly. On the third through the fourteenth day, place two drops in the affected eye every four hours. Treatment may be continued after 14 days if corneal re-epithelization has not been occurred.

Bacterial conjunctivitis: The recommended dosage regimen for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis is one or two drops instilled into the conjunctival sac(s) every two hours while awake for two days and one or two drops every four hours while awake for the next five days.

 

Interaction of Aprocin 3 Ophthalmic Ointment

Specific drug interaction studies have not been observed with ophthalmic Ciprofloxacin.

 

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to quinolone group of antibacterials or any of the components of the formulation.

 

Side Effects of Aprocin 3 Ophthalmic Ointment

Local burning or discomfort, itching, foreign body sensation, crystalline precipitates, lid margin crusting, conjunctival hyperemia and a bad taste following administration. Photophobia and nausea may be reported.

 

Pregnancy & Lactation

During pregnancy, only use if the potential advantages outweigh the risk. It's unclear if topical ophthalmic administration causes excretion in human milk. In nursing moms, caution should be maintained.

 

Precautions & Warnings

Ciprofloxacin use in the eyes for a long time can cause non-susceptible organisms, such as fungus, to overgrow. Ciprofloxacin should be stopped as soon as a skin rash or other evidence of hypersensitivity reaction appears.
