Generics:Levamisole 40mg
Levamisole
Levamisole is a fast-acting medication that paralyzes the worm's muscle within seconds of contact with the nematode nerve ganglia. The worms are expelled by regular peristaltic movement, generally within 24 hours following levamisole treatment, because they are unable to retain their position. Although it is known that levamisole predominantly affects nematodes' neuromuscular system, it is conceivable that inhibition of the fumarate reductase system adds to levamisole's anthelmintic effectiveness in some helminths. Levamisole is used to treat gastrointestinal worm infections caused by the following species:
Tetramisole's active laevo-isomer, levamisole, is the active laevo-isomer. It works by paralyzing intestinal worms, which are subsequently passed through the intestines. In humans, levamisole improves cellular immune responses.
The following doses of Levamisole are given as a single administration, preferably after a light meal.
In cases of severe hookworm infection it is suggested that a second standard dose be given one or seven days after the first, whichever timing is feasible.
Phenytoin toxicity may be increased. Ivermectin bioavailability is increased; albendazole bioavailability is decreased. A disulfiram-like response is caused by alcohol.
The usage of Levamisole has no absolute contraindications.
Side effects are uncommon. Nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, giddiness (dizziness), and headache are the most common symptoms. A few patients have been observed to develop an encephalopathy-like condition two or three weeks following therapy.
Despite the fact that animal studies have demonstrated that Levamisole has no teratogenic effects, contemporary medical practice dictates that the benefits of any medication used during pregnancy be balanced against the risks.
Effect on capacity to drive or operate machinery: There is no indication that Levamisole, when taken as an anthelmintic, causes drowsiness. Mild and transitory giddiness is a rare treatment side effect. There are no recommendations for safeguarding one's ability to drive or operate machines.
A brief fever may develop if microfilariaemia is present.
