Indications

The antibiotic gatifloxacin is used to treat the following infections:

• Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Staphylococcus aureus cause an acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis.
• Streptococcus pneumoniae or Haemophilus influenzae cause acute sinusitis.
• Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, or Legionella pneumophila cause community-acquired pneumonia.
• Simple skin and skin structure infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes (i.e. simple abscesses, furuncles, folliculitis, wound infections, and cellulitis).

• Infections of the urinary tract caused by E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, or Proteus mirabilis.

• Infections of the urinary tract caused by E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, or Proteus mirabilis.

• Escherichia coli-induced pyelonephritis.

• Neisseria gonorrhoeae caused uncomplicated urethral and cervical gonorrhea.

• Neisseria gonorrhoeae causes acute, uncomplicated rectal infections in women.

Pharmacology

Gatifloxacin could be a fluoroquinolone antibacterial which acts by hindering DNA blend in vulnerable life forms through restraint of both DNA gyrase (fundamental for bacterial propagation) and topoisomerase IV (fundamental amid bacterial cell division).

Dosage & Administration

• Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis: 400 mg 5 days
• Acute Sinusitis: 400 mg 10 days
• Community-acquired Pneumonia: 400 mg 7-14 days
• Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections: 400 mg 7-10 days
• Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections: 400 mg Single Dose or 200 mg 3 days
• Complicated Urinary Tract Infections: 400 mg 7-10 days
• Acute Pyelonephritis: 400 mg 7-10 days
• Uncomplicated Urethral Gonnorrhea in Men: 400 mg Single dose.
• Gatifloxacin can be administered without regard to food.

Interaction

Gatifloxacin is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity of Gatifloxacin, quinolone antimicrobial agents, or any other components of this product.

Contraindications

Patients having a history of hypersensitivity to Gatifloxacin, quinolone antibiotic drugs, or any other component of this medicine should not take it.

Side Effects

Gatifloxacin is well tolerated by most people. Nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, dizziness, and headache are the most typical side effects that might occur while taking this medication.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Gatifloxacin should only be given to a pregnant woman if the possible benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus.

Lactation: Gatifloxacin is not known to be excreted in human milk. Because many medicines are excreted in human milk, gatifloxacin should be given with caution to a nursing mother.

Precautions & Warnings

In the case of renal impairment, gatifloxacin should be used with caution.
