Indications of Novelon

This is advised in the case of oral contraception.

Pharmaceutical Name of Novelon

Renata Limited

Pharmacology

This is a combination oral contraceptive pill combining drospirenone, a synthetic progestogen, and ethinylestradiol, a synthetic estrogen. This tablet's contraceptive efficacy is based on the interplay of several mechanisms, the most important of which are the suppression of ovulation and alterations in cervical secretion. When this pill is taken as directed, the egg cells are stopped from developing to the point where they may be fertilized, the cervical mucus stays thick enough to act as a barrier to sperm, and the endometrium is rendered unsuitable for implantation. In addition to preventing conception, estrogen/progestogen combinations offer a number of beneficial qualities that, in addition to the negative properties, might be valuable in deciding on a method of birth control. The cycle is more regular, and menstruation is generally less painful, with lesser flow.

Drospirenone contains antimineralocorticoid action, which means it can help with estrogen-related salt retention. Drospirenone has a favorable lipid profile when combined with ethinylestradiol, with a rise in high-density lipoprotein HDL. Drospirenone has antiandrogenic properties and does not interfere with the rise of ethinylestradiol-related sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), which is beneficial for binding and inactivating endogenous androgens. Drospirenone has no androgenic, estrogenic, glucocorticoid, or antiglucocorticoid action. This, together with its antimineralocorticoid and antiandrogenic characteristics, provides drospirenone a biochemical and pharmacological profile that is very similar to that of the natural hormone progesterone.

Dosage & Administration

When and how to take the pills: There are 21 tablets in this tablet box. Each pill is labeled on the package with the day of the week it is to be taken. Take your tablet about the same time every day, with water if necessary. Follow the arrows until all 21 pills have been consumed. Do not take any tablets for the following 7 days. During these 7 days (the withdrawal phase), a period should begin; rarely, it will begin on day 2-3 following the final tablettablet. Even if your menstruation persists, start taking your next pack on the eighth day. This means you'll always start fresh packs on the same day of the week, and the withdrawal bleed will occur on about the same days each month.

When no hormonal contraception has been taken in the previous month, you can begin your first pack of this pill. Begin taking this pill on the first day of your cycle, which is also the first day of menstrual bleeding. Take a pill labeled with that week's date. Take a pill labeled Sunday, for example, if your menstruation begins on a Sunday. Then go through the days in order. You can also begin on days 2-5 of your cycle, but be sure you utilize an extra contraceptive technique (barrier method) for the first 7 days of tablet-taking in your first cycle.

When switching from one combination Pill to another: You can begin taking this pill the day after you finish the final tablet in your current Pill pack (this means no tablet-free break). If your current Pill pack includes inactive tablets, you can begin taking this pill the day after you take the first active tablet (if you are not sure which this is, ask your doctor or pharmacist). You may alternatively begin later, but no later than the day following your current Pill's tablet free break (or the day after the last inactive tablet of your present Pill).

When switching from a progestogen-only pill to a mini pill: You can stop taking the tiny pill at any moment and begin taking this tablet the next day. However, employ an additional-contraceptive technique (a barrier method) during the first 7 days of tablet use when having intercourse.

When switching from an injectable to an implant: Begin taking this tablet when your next injection is due or on the day your implant is removed. However, for the first 7 days of tablet usage, employ an extra contraceptive technique (a barrier method) when having intercourse.

After having a baby: If you have just given birth, your doctor may advise you to wait until after your first regular period before beginning to take this pill. It is sometimes feasible to begin sooner. Your doctor will give you advice. If you are breast-feeding and wish to take this pill, see your doctor beforehand.

After a miscarriage or an abortion: Your doctor will advise you.

If you consume too many of these tablet tablets at once (overdose): There have been no reports of significant adverse effects from taking too many of these tablet tablets at once. You may have nausea, vomiting, or vaginal bleeding if you take multiple pills at once. If you discover that a child has taken this pill, get advice from your doctor.

When to discontinue use of this tablet: You may discontinue use of this tablet at any time. If you don't want to get pregnant, talk to your doctor about other birth control options. If you stop taking this medication because you wish to become pregnant, it is typically advised that you wait until you have had a normal period before attempting to conceive.
